Bradenton Kickoff Regatta - Sept 25

Sept 25 & 26 - Bradenton Yacht Club - Fall Kickoff Regatta

The organizers have offered to have a separate course for the Melges 24s and J/24s.  This is always a great regatta with fun parties and live music Friday night and Saturday night.  It would be great if we could have good representation from Fleet 86.  They have a hoist, so we can get boats down there by land or by water.

Please let me know if you need any assistance with logistics and if you are thinking about joining us.

2010 Pot O Gold Regatta - April 17

Don't miss this year's Pot O Gold Regatta on April 17th.
This is a "fun-race" for one day at DIYC.

If you are a boat looking for crew or crew looking for a boat, let Kevin know.  There are several boats coming from SPYC that need crew.  We're also looking for volunteers to help with Race Committee and/or the post-race party.

  • Hot Wheels
  • Long Shot
  • Rabble Rouser
  • Kracken
  • Sight Seeing
  • Pigs in Hiding
  • Supernatural Fishslapper
  • Irish
  • Black Magic Woman

FORMAT
The plan is to do a similar format like we did for the last "fun-race."  We'll mix some practice starts in between racing (probably not quite as many practice starts this time so that we can try to get more racing in).

WEATHER/TIDES/SUNSET
For the weather, I don't have much luck, so I'm not going to predict this early and we'll play it by ear.  The low tide is at 9:29AM, high tide is at 3:35pm, and Sunset is at 7:56PM.

PARKING
Please help me make sure that all non-members park in the grass area between the front gate and the dry-dock boats on trailers.  There's a DIYC work party the same day, so we may need to all park out there if something is being done to the parking lot (like painting).

SOCIAL
If the weather cooperates, we'll have a cookout after the race on the point.  We'll have burgers, so please bring other food items to share.

NOR & Entry Form

I am arranging accommodations with Post Card Inn on the Beach.

http://www.postcardinn.com

Any of you who have tried to get a room this time of year on St. Pete Beach know how hard this is.  Anne is trying to negotiate a special rate through her work.  Just a little more to help to get us out there.  I will make accommodations for trailers at St. Pete Sailing Center.  Come down Friday Night and take the boat over to PAG.  Then, you can bring the boat back to St. Pete Sunday morning.  Give me a call with questions.  St. Pete will work with us if we get enough boats!

Special thanks to King Purton for volunteering to to run the windward mark boat and Herman Bips for offering his powerboat for us to use.  If anybody knows of somebody that would like to come out and help King on the pin boat and take some photos of the racing please let me know.  They can head back early while we're still racing if they want (around 3:30-4:00).

2009 DIYC Triathlon - Nov 7/8

E-mail Print PDF

HELP NEEDED: Please help us make sure that the J/24 Fleet is represented in the DIYC Triathlon!!!

The 2009 DIYC Triathlon for the benefit of DIYC Youth Sailing will be held Saturday and Sunday, November 7th and 8th. Entries will be accepted in the name of  sailboats that race in DIYC events. Each team will consist of four members of whom, one must be a female. Competition will take place in bowling, sailing, and golf. The amazing low cost will be a contribution of $50 per person or $200 per boat to DIYSF (Davis Island Youth Sailing Foundation). While I am hoping for ten or more teams, entries will be limited to eighteen teams.  The event will open with a bowling meet where cumulative scores of each team member will determine the winner. The meet will be held at Pinarama Bowling, corner of Gandy and Dale Mabry and will start at 10:00, Nov. 7th. This will be followed by a optional lunch at the Club. A skipper’s meeting for the pursuit race will be held at 1PM. At that time, you will receive the course of about 1:30 duration and your starting time. Starts will be from 2PM until 2:30 or thereabouts. The beauty of the pursuit race is that you know how you are doing from the start to the end, not waiting :30 for the results.  If you are in front of another boat, you are beating him or her. If you are behind another boat, better luck next time. That evening, you will be invited to the DIYSF auction and dinner. Dinner tickets for your mates will cost extra. On Sunday Nov. 8th,  we will play golf at Silverado in Zephyhills, about a :35 drive from the Club. Silverado is a fairly easy course where the odds are if you slice, you will probably be on a adjoining fairway as opposed to being in the woods. We will play a best ball format where everyone drives and then you pick the best drive and everyone shoots their second shot from that position  and so on. This works very well in that the last golf outing, only two shots separated the first team from the fourth. We will meet at 8:00 for a competitor’s meeting, assign carts, and depart for your assigned starting hole where we will have a shotgun start at 8:30 (in our case a blast of a air horn just so that you will feel at home).   Scoring will be if we have ten teams, ten points to the winner, nine points for second place and so in each of the three events. In this case, thirty points would be up for grabs. Up to date scores will be available at the skipper’s meeting, the DIYSF auction dinner and at a awards luncheon at the Silverado restaurant. A perpetual trophy will be awarded to the winning boat and will be on display in the Clubhouse for the next year. If you are not the world’s best at bowling or golf, do not let that hold you back. Competition is the name of the game.

Entry forms will be available at DIYC or from me.

King Purton

[Editorial Note: I have removed King's personal email since this is a public website.  If you would like more information or need to register, send your fleet captain an email]

Hosted by George Haynie, Ed Ruark, Jay Booker and King Purton.
