2009 Holi-J Regatta Report

The Holi-J regatta on December 5th saw some excellent breeze that provided great entertainment for the spectators.  The steady 25 knot breeze, with gusts to 30, led to some damaged equipment, great crew training, and some tired souls.  After four races, the top four spots went to Supernatural Fishslapper, Long Shot, Hot Wheels, and Irish.  Special thanks to King Purton, Herman Bipps, JA Booker, and George Smith for their Race Committee Work.

2009 J-Vemberfest Report

E-mail Print PDF

November 14th must have been the best day for sailing in 2009 with a temperature of 70 degrees, a steady 10 knot breeze from the west, flat bay waters, and a clear blue sky.  Fleet 86 saw seven boats meet up for the J-Vemberfest regatta at DIYC.  Since this was not a series-counting event, competitors enjoyed an informal afternoon on the water.

Although this was intended to be a casual "fun" race, you would have never known it based on the tight finishes.  During the 3 hours of racing, the fleet completed six practice starts and four races.  For the practice starts, Irish was the most consistent with good position in almost every case.  Supernatural Fishslapper led the fleet with bullets in every race.  Going into the fourth race of the day, Team Camp and Irish were tied for second place.  However, Team Camp secured the trophy for second place overall with a strong finish.

After the race, the crews met up for a sunset potluck cookout.  Special thanks to Hank Pomerantz for his race committee work, Rob Wetmore for being grill-master, Jason Chavez for the excellent Public Relations work, the Fishslapper crew for showing us what we should be doing, everybody for bringing the great food, and all of the crews, spouses, kids, and friends that joined us for the cookout.

2009 King's Day Regatta - Jax

Several Tampa Bay J/24 sailors made it to Jacksonville for the annual King’s Day regatta Nov 21st; four boats in the twenty boat fleet had crew members from our area. Three short practice races were sailed on Friday afternoon in nice 10 knot NE breeze. In addition to polishing up some crew work, the practice race helped build a little appetite for the oyster roast later that night.

Saturday brought less ideal conditions with very light breeze and a solid flood current. The lead boats struggled to advance against the current and close the final 100 yards for about 20min as the time limit expired and the only race of the day was abandoned.

Three races were completed on Sunday in a light but fairly solid breeze that averaged about 5 knots. It took multiple general recalls and combinations of I and Z flags to get the fleet off the line. Starting cleanly was paramount as boats that had to restart struggled to find passing lanes in each of the races.

David Noble’s team (including local sailor Tom Barry) won the event which is a nice accomplishment since they are pretty new to the J/24 circuit. Free Candy from Columbia, SC finished second and Party Reptile from Augusta finished third. Majic and Vanishing Act, from Jacksonville and NJ, rounded out the top 5.

The Florida Yacht Club and Fleet 55 are always fantastic hosts and make this a great event to attend.

2009 East Coast Championship

E-mail Print PDF

Long shot made the trip to Annapolis for the j24 East Coast Championship regatta last weekend. In addition to the j24 regatta, the Melges 24 worlds was concluding and several big boat fleets were racing. All of the activity created quite a buzz which made for a great fall weekend in Annapolis.

Longshot

The j24 fleet had 3 days of good racing which ranged from light (1-2 persons hiking) to solid breeze (top end genoa). The sailing conditions were always tough with strong current, big shifts and a very competitive fleet. Our team’s ability to keep the boat in phase and solid boat speed helped us overcome some really bad starts and rough boat handling. We were happy to finish 10th making it two years running a fleet 86 boat has finished in the top 10 (Rental had an outstanding “top amateur” finish last year).

The East Coast Championship regatta is always a favorite and definitely worth the trip. We’ve gotten pretty good at simplifying the logistics and minimizing expenses, we’re glad to share our secrets and would love to see another local boat make the trip next year.
