2009 D-10 Championship/Green Bench Report

E-mail Print PDF

Thanks for all who made it out to the 2010 Green Bench District 10 Championships.  We were greeted with questionable "Rainy" weather on Saturday which made the SPYC bar the next best place for some great Bloody Mary's.  At 1:30 the decision was made to throw in the towel by PRO George Pennington and Fleet Rep Rob Wetmore.  Lead to District 10 Governor Brian Malone driving USA 4190 for his wife Kat.  Brian made it out to the course in time and convinced everyone that it was indeed "Sailable".   By the time the fleet arrived on the course, a solid 5-7 kts had arrived and 2 races were completed.  I will not diminish this report by giving a blow by blow account of wind shifts, currents and close finishes.  Leave it to the next regatta's hand sailing competition and just go to www.spyc.org for results.  Sunday was September sailing at it's best, 8-10 kts building to 12-15 kts and 4 races were completed.   If you missed the Green Bench this year, mark it on next years calendar.  We will be changing the date back to the 1st weekend in December.

Thanks,

Rob Wetmore

Fleet 86 Roadtrip to Miami

E-mail Print PDF

The J/24 Fleet 86 was well represented in Miami last month at the J/24 Florida State Championships.  Seven boats from Fleet 86 made the road trip to race in Biscayne Bay as part of a 19-boat fleet.  Miami's Fleet 55 and Flat Earth Racing were excellent hosts with superb race committee work, a great Saturday night party, and two days of memorable racing.

Out of the 19 boats competing, the top four boats took home trophies, and three of those were from Fleet 86.  Fourth place went to John Poulson's crew on LongShot, and in third place was Brian Malone's crew on Supernatural Fishslapper.  The overall winner of the regatta was Robby Brown's crew on USA799.  Congratulations to these skippers and crew for a job well done.

Be sure to reserve 12-13 September for the District 10 Championships/Green Bench Regatta at St. Pete Yacht Club.  For more details and the NOR, visit http://spyc.org online.

July Owner's Meeting

E-mail Print PDF

The J-24 Owners of Fleet 86 had a great planning meeting, and the official race schedule will be published when it is finalized.  In the meantime, we are trying to build our Fleet 86 email distribution list to ensure that we have included anybody that is interested in being involved with the J-24 fleet during the 2009-10 season.  Anybody interested can be on the J-24 Fleet 86 email list.  We're looking for all owners, crew, race volunteers, amateurs, experts, party animals, and anybody else that just wants to be in the loop.  Feel free to pass along names & email addresses for any of your friends that want to be on our email list (even if they are not DIYC members).  You can send all requests to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you want to be added to the list.

Next month, Fleet 86 will head to the US Sailing Center in Miami and join Flat Earth Racing for the Florida State J/24 Championship on 18-19 July.  This annual regatta will include several DIYC boats and is always includes great competition at a great venue.  With clear water and downtown Miami as the backdrop, Biscayne Bay is an excellent experience.

We're excited about a great 2009-10 J-24 season, and we hope you will join us on the race course, or at least back at the bar!
