J/24 Fleet 86 - Tampa, FL

Bradenton Kickoff Regatta - Sept 25

Sept 25 & 26 - Bradenton Yacht Club - Fall Kickoff Regatta

The organizers have offered to have a separate course for the Melges 24s and J/24s.  This is always a great regatta with fun parties and live music Friday night and Saturday night.  It would be great if we could have good representation from Fleet 86.  They have a hoist, so we can get boats down there by land or by water.

Please let me know if you need any assistance with logistics and if you are thinking about joining us.

D10s - What it Takes to Win

While reading John Poulson’s report on the D10 Championship regatta it became apparent that personal modesty or maybe journalistic integrity caused him to leave out an important aspect of his story, specifically the nearly clinical precision with which he and Team Longshot sailed to victory in the regatta.

Observed from the racecourse, USA 2917 displayed all of the factors that are inherent in a successful campaign, good basic tactics, clean boat handling and maneuvering, and pure speed. I think there is a lesson in all of this for all of us.

If you look closely at USA2917 at any regatta, several things will become apparent. First thing you will notice is that the boat and gear is immaculate, John spends a significant amount of time, sweat, and OH yes, money to provide his team with the best equipment available, minimizing even the thought of equipment failure or doubt as to the boat’s potential performance.

Second you will realize that the key crew on the boat all look familiar. Team Longshot, like all of us, has seen some personnel changes over the years, but manages to retain key performers and assimilate substitutions to the crew very thoroughly. All of that pretty equipment is useless without a well coordinated and skillful crew.

Finally is the fact that if you decided to check up on my previous statements you need only attend any J/24 event in the District or major events farther afield, there is the highest chance that you will see them there. There is no substitute for time on the water racing, at any level.

This is just a bare bones commentary on some things that I feel should be looked at by every owner in our District and beyond who wants to raise their game. Perhaps, as it does me, it will motivate you to delve a little deeper in to the basic essentials of building and maintaining a successful and rewarding racing program, and just maybe give some insight into the question – Why didn’t we do better in that race?

2010 District 10 Championship - Miami

Fleet 86 was well represented at the District Championship Regatta held in Miami over the July 17th weekend.  Long shot, Bahamian Jihad (aka SFS), and Black Magic Woman (BMW) made the trip, and several of the 799 regulars sailed on a local Miami boat.

Sailing conditions were fantastic for July in Florida; both days saw 15kt+ breeze with fairly steady oscillations. Sailing at the top end of the genoa can be quite difficult and all of the teams got plenty of practice. Most boats went to the jib at some point and there were countless trimmers seen pouting at the bar throughout the weekend.

Four races were completed Saturday with long shot and Bahamian Jihad going 1-2 for the first 3. Following the sailing there was plenty of R&R to be had at the Coral Reef YC pool and Tiki Bar; later there was a regatta party held at a home in one of the older coconut grove neighborhoods. Sunday brought another 3 races with the Fleet 86 boats managing to win each of the day’s races. Long shot won the event with Bahamian Jihad finishing 2nd and the 799 group 5th.

As always, the Miami fleet were gracious hosts and there was all sorts of fun to be had in Coconut Grove. The July regatta in Miami is always great since its right in the middle of the slow season in Tampa; it’s also fairly easy and inexpensive to attend.

2010 Pot O Gold Regatta - April 17

Don't miss this year's Pot O Gold Regatta on April 17th.
This is a "fun-race" for one day at DIYC.

If you are a boat looking for crew or crew looking for a boat, let Kevin know.  There are several boats coming from SPYC that need crew.  We're also looking for volunteers to help with Race Committee and/or the post-race party.

CONFIRMED ENTRIES - 10 BOATS (as of 4/16 @ 3:30pm):

  • Hot Wheels
  • Long Shot
  • Rabble Rouser
  • Kracken
  • Sight Seeing
  • Pigs in Hiding
  • Supernatural Fishslapper
  • Irish
  • Black Magic Woman
  • Roadkill

Schedule:

      11:30am - Competitor's Breifing - ON THE FLOATING DOCK
12:15pm - First Warning with races to follow

Click Here for the Notice of Race

Click Here for the Waiver & Registration Form

FORMAT
The plan is to do a similar format like we did for the last "fun-race."  We'll mix some practice starts in between racing (probably not quite as many practice starts this time so that we can try to get more racing in).

WEATHER/TIDES/SUNSET
For the weather, I don't have much luck, so I'm not going to predict this early and we'll play it by ear.  The low tide is at 9:29AM, high tide is at 3:35pm, and Sunset is at 7:56PM.

PARKING
Please help me make sure that all non-members park in the grass area between the front gate and the dry-dock boats on trailers.  There's a DIYC work party the same day, so we may need to all park out there if something is being done to the parking lot (like painting).

SOCIAL
If the weather cooperates, we'll have a cookout after the race on the point.  We'll have burgers, so please bring other food items to share.
